Sounding Off at Aldershot
Audio visual specialists Integrated Circles have just completed work in the recently revamped John Reed and Rushmoor Local History Galleries at Aldershot Military Museum.
The London-based audio visual company have installed a range of their highly specialised products in the two galleries to enhance the visitors enjoyment of the displays.
In the John Reed Gallery would-be soldiers will be given the opportunity to experience the thrills and spills of Army life.
A specially adapted helmet allows visitors to experience the exhilaration of driving a tank across rough terrain and there’s the chance to crawl through an Army training tunnel, present arms to the roar of the drill sergeant or and experience the Spartan comforts of a Victorian soldier’s bed.
For the brave of heart the Cavalry model features the sound effect of horses and in the gallery workshop there’s the authentic aromas of the stabling to complete the visitor experience!
All the video passages run on Integrated Circles new solid state Compact VideoStores and all the sound effects run on the Digital Sound Stores.
The John Reed Gallery was opened on October 20 and is named after the late Brigadier John Reed, a former Aldershot Garrison commander who founded the museum in 1984.
Funding for the £250,000 renovation was provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, in addition tro grants from Rushmoor Borough Council and Hampshire County Council.
Nicola Xuereb, Grants Officer for the Heritage Lottery Fund in South East England, said:” The Heritage Lottery Fund is delighted to have helped the museum carry out these improvements to enable visitors to learn more about the military and social history of the area.
“It has made the collections accessible and relevant to a broader audience, including schoolchildren, families, women and people with disabilities.
“With its new interactive and hands-on displays, the museum has taken an innovative approach that helps bring history to life.”
Caroline James, Project Manager at Integrated Circles, added:” We believe the audio visuals installed within the gallery give visitors the unique opportunity of experiencing first hand the thrills and spills of Army life.
“The equipment we installed gives visitors whatever their age or sex the opportunity to find out for themselves what it’s really like to drive a tank, to take orders and work in such close proximity to animals!
“Our new Compact Video Store gives museum staff complete peace of mind, it has no moving parts and can run all day every day and what’s more it comes with a five year warranty. Such guarantees are important if we are to provide visitors with the maximum enjoyment and staff the minimum of fuss.”
