The British Red Cross - Voices of Volunteers Exhibition

Audio visual specialists Integrated Circles have recently completed work at the ‘Voices of Volunteers’ exhibition being staged at the Barbican Centre that focuses on the work undertaken by British Red Cross Volunteers.

The London-based team have installed a range of custom-built telephone handsets, powered by their Digital SoundStore technology to bring to life the individual accounts of volunteers’ experiences with the British Red Cross.

Sixty-three-year-old Edith is a volunteer based in Northern Ireland, she was awarded an MBE for her commitment to members of her community, including victims of the troubles. She offers a service helping people hide skin disfigurement, giving a newfound confidence to people who have been scarred through tragedies like the Omagh bomb.

The exhibition also includes information on the various services offered by the organisation, including a Befriending Service and Fire Victim Support Service. It opened on 17 October 2001 and coincides with the International Year of Volunteers.

“Our Solid State SoundStores are a sensible technology choice for this type of public exhibition, as audio is faithfully reproduced and quality will not degrade over the 10 year warranty period” explained Paul Nolan, Project Manager for Integrated Circles. “Once a visitor has listened to an account and replaced the handset on the display, the audio will instantly reset to the beginning of the track, ready for the next visitor.”

The exhibition will tour various venues across the UK over the next three years including Brighton, Leeds and Edinburgh.
